For the past 30 years The Wharf Rat has been serving up craft, seasonal, and cask-conditioned ales to happy Baltimore customers, but this place has a history that goes back even farther. You see, “wharf rat” was an 18-century term that referred to men who made their living on the sea — as sailors, as pirates, as privateers — and these men flocked to the wharfside pubs whenever their ships docked. As a pub, then, The Wharf Rat recalls the spirit and hospitality of those days, and serves only quality beer and house-made meals in a warm and friendly atmosphere near Union Wharf.
The building itself dates back to the 1700s, but you can keep yourself rooted firmly in the present by visiting during some of the pub’s decidedly modern special events, like trivia Tuesdays or pizza Wednesdays. Whenever you visit, be sure you order your favorite craft brew to wash down a burger and fries or an order of fish and chips!
